The age old question - should you lift heavy? Or should you do more reps?

The short answer - it depends.

If your goal is to gain strength, lifting heavy is the best way to go about doing it.

If it’s muscle endurance, reps are the way to go.

If your goal is to gain muscle or retain muscle while in a deficit, guess what? Both will work. For muscle growth to occur, the key is to train CLOSE to failure. It doesn’t matter if you do it with 6 reps or 20 reps. There really is no magical number.

However doing excessive reps all the time can take a longer time to heal. On the other hand, it can also be difficult to go heavy on certain exercises. And then there’s the problem of sh!tty form, egotistical training etc etc.

So as they say in Singapore - “Eh? How liddat?”

The answer is to have a combination of both. One that can help you stay consistent with your training for the long term.

“Success is the sum of small efforts - repeated day in and day out” Robert Collier

No idea who this Robert feller is, but he makes a good point. There are many times when we see new clients have a history of overestimating their fitness and going “all in” when they start training on their own. They find some random program only to fall off the bandwagon and give up hope.

Remember that having a structured program which allows you to make small compounding improvements will get you further in the long run.

Be smart about training. Going all out balls to the wall when you are in your early 20’s MIGHT get you somewhere in the short term. But in the long term, success is questionable.

We can’t guarantee you quick success. Because that would require drastic (and unhealthy) measures.

What we can guarantee is that you will love the process and eventually attain your goals SAFELY. That, and you yourself would almost certainly want to achieve greater things. 😉

You want long term results and returns from your training? Be smart about it. Play the long game. Play it consistently. Find a way to stay on that damn wagon.

Tomorrow is world mental health day. Here’s a few ways on how we can IMPROVE mental health at the PIT. We are fully aware that exercise alone does not CURE mental health issues.

1. Exercise is well known to stimulate the body to produce endorphins and enkephalins - the body’s natural feel-good hormones which can help to manage our stresses and problems more effectively.
2. Regular exercise can improve blood flow to the parts of your brain involved in rational decision making, and can lead to improved mental flexibility and stress resilience.
3. Some of the endorphins produced by exercise, result in a boost in a protein called “Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor” which encourages nerve cell growth in your brain and protect your brain against cognitive decline.
4. Exercise naturally boosts serotonin - a 'feel good' chemical which when low, can result in depressive symptoms

Having a community that doesn’t judge you, but celebrates your achievements big or small - will help make exercise more sustainable AND enjoyable. Nobody will make you feel bad IF you fail or for the decisions you make. Nobody gets put down. But instead, trainers and other clients alike will lift you up so that you get the support you need to improve your physical and mental health. As cliche as it may sound - The PIT is not just a community. It’s family - Some of you may or may not get the @vindiesel Fast and Furious reference. 🤭

We had some fur friends visit us this morning while their human parents trained. We love dogs. And they are welcome to come in as long as they don’t poo and pee in the gym! And as long as they don’t disrupt training. Ok ok. They can disrupt training a bit. I mean, who could get angry with these adorable faces?
