I started, at the suggestion of a good friend, in early 2016. At the time I weighed 142kgs and thanks to a sedentary job and poor lifestyle choices, had lost the strength and any conditioning I might have once had. Unlike other gyms, Ving and the guys never promised a “quick fix”: instead, by focussing on consistency and advising on making small adjustments, they turned training into a sustainable part of my day that I cannot currently live without. You bring the discipline and they bring everything else. I’ve been going for six years now – consistently! – have lost nearly 40kgs in the process and am stronger and fitter than I have been for more than 20 years – if not ever. It’s also not just the “training” and weight loss: their experience and technical know-how means they know how to train you to recover from, and improve, on injuries that we all acquire at some point in our lives. I started the PIT 2017 with no plan as to what I wanted to achieve. My family was new to Singapore. Being a stay at home dad who was very active with 2 children and rugby. Turning 42 and also tipping the scale at 130kg it was becoming very hard to keep up. I needed a gym. I needed a trainer! The PIT was my answer. Irving became my trainer and he began a program that was suitable at my level of fitness. Tracking progress and taking in account of physical needs and goals. PIT also provided me with a dietary plan that has changed how I look and think about the food I eat. Macro tracking and the training protocol has transformed me into a better state of Mind and wellness. I have since moved back to the United States. I continue to use the services of The PIT and my trainer Irving. We communicate via WhatsApp or FaceTime to track Irving’s training program and macros. I miss the PIT dearly as it also became a place where all the trainers and clients came together in a very happy, judgement free atmosphere. I also made great connections and friends.

I began training at the PIT a few years ago. Irving was quick to reply to my inquiry when I was looking for a new gym to train in and I was quick to take up his offer of a free trial session. The atmosphere at The PIT is friendly and positive. The trainers are knowledgeable and are constantly updating their skills and competing in sporting events. The specialism of each trainer complements the others and the team is very strong. I have worked with a few of them and have learned new skills and techniques from each one. Also the opportunity to choose between personal training and classes is a perfect combination to fit any lifestyle or budget. Training there each week is like visiting a friend’s house. A friend with a variety of really cool toys – huge tyres and prowlers! When I worked with previous trainers I was quite inflexible, wasn’t able to squat to parallel and the weights I used were light. After spending time training with PITMASTER ‘Ving’ I was able to make great progress in all areas and now easily squat BELOW parallel and the weights I use have increased greatly. So much so that I competed in the Singapore Powerlifting Open in 2013 and bagged a silver medal in my weight category. As well as the PITMASTERS, the PITBULLS are an amazing group of athletes who help and support each other. In my training for the Powerlifting competition I had the privilege of training with fellow PITBULL Feng. Such a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful coach. Irving has the perfect combination of kindness, sarcasm and understanding about when to push a client that he succeeds in a big way. I am a 41 year old business executive. In my mid twenties I was very interested in bodybuilding. I worked out hard and loved the gym. As I got older my body started to break down, and I n my early 30’s I developed injuries that prevented me from working out with weights. Since then I have focused on endurance sports (running/biking/swimming) but my muscle mass was mostly gone. This past year I moved to Singapore and decided to look for a trainer that could help me overcome my prior injuries and put some muscle back on. I tried the PIT and was fortunate to find Jordion. Jordion went to work. After assessing my fitness level he quickly theorized that one of my muscle groups was under developed in comparison to the rest which could be the reason I was getting pain in certain spots. Some trainers force you into a one size fits all program which would not have worked for me. Some push you to workout until you collapse. Some force you to go way heavier and faster than you should. Hadn’t I listened and believed in Jordion, my impatient self would probably have gotten myself another injury.
5 months ago, if you’d asked me to do a squat, I’d physically be unable to do so because of a permanent injury that I have in both my knees. Even the doctor told me that I will never be able to run, do any knee-bending exercises, and any other sports other than swimming. I’ve been to a few other trainers and Jordion is the only one who had exceeded my expectations. He is extremely reassuring and generous with his training knowledge. My knee pain was really affecting my mental health and so I was really eager to see and feel some sort of results and improvement. Doing only body weight exercises at the start made me feel even more impatient. Jordion empathised with me as he had a similar injury in the past and provided me with a lot of encouragement. He had shown me how important building mental resilience and strength is, just as how important it is to build physical strength. He often remind me to take things slow because fitness is a lifetime journey, not a destination. Hadn’t I listened and believed in Jordion, my impatient self would probably have gotten myself another injury. Haha! Today, I am glad and proud to be able to do squats and deadlift without any knee pain at all.

Learnt about The PIT 5 years ago when i was part of the Singapore team representing Muay thai, we had our strength and conditioning done there, first impression of the owner Irving was that he was abit intimidating as he was a big man with lots of tattoos who expected no nonsense when it comes to training… however upon multiple sessions with him, he is one of the nicest and down to earth person one can ever know. Through The PIT, i was able to improve my muaythai game from having an overall improved core, lower body and upper body strength, from the progressive sets of strength work i did on the barbell and squat racks. I also felt i had improved endurance from the metabolic conditining drills given to me. Each session i was being pushed over the limit and i thoroughly enjoyed it. Over the years i have nothing but utmost respect and admiration towards Irving , as a mentor and most importantly as a friend who would be there to help me and give me advice whenever i needed it!! Luckily for me he had a slot to train me and fast forward I ran two half marathons and a few trail runs injury free in 2017 following a very systematic strength programme.
In 2016 I was just recovering from a AC joint inflammation on my shoulder which thankfully got fixed by my physiotherapist. However my physio said I needed to lay off the bench press pretty much for life to avoid recurrence which I dutifully followed. Then my right knee started giving me serious pain when I started running again that year. Thankfully though that led me to a chiropractor who then referred me to the PIT for strength training in late 2016. I read Ving’s story on his website where he shares his experience about getting a full on back surgery and then setting a new world record for the bench press in that same year, which to me is worthy of a Hollywood movie. Luckily for me he had a slot to train me and fast forward I ran two half marathons and a few trail runs injury free in 2017 following a very systematic strength programme. Also the other trainers and students there are full of encouragement and laughter which makes it a nice place to be! Oh and did I mention I can now bench press without any shoulder pain… fast forward now to 2021, marathon done, triathlon done and strength training continues to be the core of it all.

Jordi is the best personal trainer ever!
All the PIT trainers are friendly and Jordi is one of them. He is really dedicated to his clients and has a wide variety of knowledge of training. At the beginning I wanted to lose weight, but after I started training with him, I realized the importance of training done in the correct quality, correct way, with the correct person. During the training, he explains the purpose of each training which helps me understand the ”correct” training and also it makes me motivated. Other than that, he is always checking my condition every time and adjusting the volume of the training accordingly. He also follows up after/before training and gives me advice for daily exercise as well, also encouraging me always so I can really enjoy the training! Irving understands my goals to build strength for BJJ and helps me work towards them.
I have been training at the PIT since July 2012 after a fellow Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) team mate recommended that I try some of their classes to supplement my training. I started off doing Metcon classes and though every session left me sweating buckets and sore for days, this continuous conditioning did not really transform into what I want to achieve ‚Äì to get stronger. That’s when Irving started a Strength class which I was one of the pioneer attendees. He put me on a program tailored to my abilities consisting of only four things; Deadlifts, Squats, Bench and Shoulder presses with the bar bell. No fancy equipment or the latest fitness innovations; just pure old school metal bars. The fanciest equipment is probably gymnastics rings which we use for axillary exercises or ‚Äòhomework’ that Irving prescribes. Irving understands my goals to build strength for BJJ and helps me work towards them. The strength program has made me more resilient in training and reduces the likelihood of injuries. It has also helped me perform better in Metcon classes, which further develops power and endurance required for my sport. This is one holistic strength AND conditioning facility that I couldn’t be happier with. Coupled with supportive coaches and peers, everyone is constantly looking out for one another and celebrates every little achievement you make in and out of the gym.

I have been injured twice badly after I took running as my favourite sport. I really thought that running was all about speed and putting as many miles as you could in a week. I was wrong. “Running on a treadmill, doing presses on the machine, curling with dumbbells.. are some of the typical exercises one will do. I needed more, something more to challenge my body while achieving significant results. Walking into PIT for the first time is like entering into a fight zone – think of the game Dungeon Keeper. Too much of RPG action game, but that’s similar – you will not know what is coming next for each of your training session. PITMaster Nifal evaluated every angle of my fitness before prescribing a set of training programme for me. Honestly, before walking through the door, I have always thought I own at least an average level but he smacked me down to reality which is close to zero. He focuses not only on progression but places great importance in techniques and forms too. He trains like a “rubber band” – when to stretch you through limits progressively and when to strategically release upon reaching some restrains. Also, he will ensure that he surprises you in each session with mystery routines – you can never be prepared so you can continuously shock your body through challenges. Nifal’s expertise means I get an optimal workout every time I train with him. After just 2 months of training, and a few litres of milk in my daily diet, I’m doing some stuff which I never thought I’m capable of.
I first started my journey into fitness training as an underweight, unhealthy and lethargic fellow. I lacked the self-motivation and time to take it seriously. Then in August 2013 I took the step forward and started my training under Nifal Johannes at the PIT, and my personal transformation began. From the very first time he introduced himself and the conversations we engaged in, I can see how well-versed and knowledgeable he is in training and fitness. We started with a couple of simple strength and movement techniques in order to access at what level my physical capabilities were at. At this point I remembered being asked to do a chin-up and with a body weight at 65kg, I couldn’t even pull myself up to the bar. After half hour of various movements I felt like throwing up. I felt defeated. Nifal worked out a plan of my starting strength training. We trained the first 8 weeks with free weights, 3 times per week, an hour of each session. It will start with a warm-up and then into squats. It included a mix of bench press, overhead press, dead lifts with more weights added onto the load each time. Nifal’s expertise means I get an optimal workout every time I train with him. After just 2 months of training, and a few litres of milk in my daily diet, I’m doing some stuff which I never thought I’m capable of. I’m at 70 kg now and it feels good. I am privileged to be trained by someone who I regard as a true professional in this field. Nifal is trustworthy and genuine. I thank him for the trainings, guidance, encouragement and torture… Like we said, I’ll keep my log book to show my kids someday… It’s been an amazing journey for me. This is an amazing journey so far getting to know a group of people along with Nifal who encourage each other and push each other to be better physically and mentally in what I regard as an unconventional gym will keep me going to want to better myself and achieve my goals.

Under the tutelage and watchful eye of my trainer Nifal, I have achieved things I never thought possible (like flipping a 300kg tire or completing >100 pull ups in a session).
Before joining the PIT, gym training to me has always been running on the treadmill and lifting some weights for 2 hours. Naturally I found this boring and would make excuses not to head to the gym for the longest time. Then in 2011, at the peak of my inactivity and declining fitness (and also the year I was getting married), I decided I had to do something about it. However, the thought of hitting the same routine again was too much to bear. I needed something different. And this brought me to the PIT. This place focuses on functional exercises and movements that would blow my concept of routine gym training out of the water. I made that first call and never looked back. It’s not just the training sessions I look forward to but the camaraderie in an environment of like minded and passionate individuals working hard to achieve their fitness goals – an environment that can only be built by a team with a deep passion and knowledge for what they do, exemplified by Irving and his crew of merry men. Under the tutelage and watchful eye of my trainer Nifal, I have achieved things I never thought possible (like flipping a 300kg tire or completing >100 pull ups in a session). Every session is unique pushing me physically and mentally for 60 mins and making me want to come back for more. I am stronger, fitter and faster, making competitive rugby even more enjoyable. Thanks to a friend’s recommendation, I have been training with Nifal Johannes since November 2011, and I have now completed 20 sessions within 10 weeks. Most important for me is the training menu and the instruction given by my coach, Irving. With the training menu, I can easily figure out and focus on nearest goal in every session. And Irving’s instructions always guide me to the goal in efficient and safe way.
It’s neither pain nor injury but something was wrong and put inner limit in my mind. I have been feeling like this for these several years. And I almost convinced myself that it’s quite natural to have such feeling for my ages, (I just turned fifty years old.) My biggest concern was how to keep my condition well and healthy with minimal effort not only for sports activities but also for my daily life. But more I stick to my comfortable zone, more my inner limit bothers me and less confident I feel for everything. When I reached the web site of The PIT and got to know the concept of “Strength before Conditioning”, I realized that I have nothing to “keep” but must gain what I lost as aging. Then I decided to open the door of The PIT but thought if the gym was packed with massive, scary “muscle guys”, I can quit anytime. Eventually it was NOT so big deal. The gym is always filled with friendly vibe (sometimes with funny jokes‚Ķ). It’s really fun and I always enjoy my regular strength training session every week. Irving understands my goals to build strength for BJJ and helps me work towards them.
I have been training at the PIT since July 2012 after a fellow Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) team mate recommended that I try some of their classes to supplement my training. I started off doing Metcon classes and though every session left me sweating buckets and sore for days, this continuous conditioning did not really transform into what I want to achieve – to get stronger. That’s when Irving started a Strength class which I was one of the pioneer attendees. He put me on a program tailored to my abilities consisting of only four things; Deadlifts, Squats, Bench and Shoulder presses with the bar bell. No fancy equipment or the latest fitness innovations; just pure old school metal bars. The fanciest equipment is probably gymnastics rings which we use for axillary exercises or ‘homework’ that Irving prescribes. Irving understands my goals to build strength for BJJ and helps me work towards them. The strength program has made me more resilient in training and reduces the likelihood of injuries. It has also helped me perform better in Metcon classes, which further develops power and endurance required for my sport. This is one holistic strength AND conditioning facility that I couldn’t be happier with. Coupled with supportive coaches and peers, everyone is constantly looking out for one another and celebrates every little achievement you make in and out of the gym.

In mid 2013, I started doing Metcon in The PIT Singapore under Irving, and the goal was to get back in shape. Upon his advice, I took up additional strength training to lose more weight that I gained after I quit competitive rowing in dragon boat. After 3 months, I managed to lose 10kg and was able to maintain my ideal weight. I have also managed to beat my personal records in lifting weights and mental strength to the next level. Along the way, I have made many like-minded friends and few of us have even become close friends. Going to The PIT does not feel like going to those big name gyms, it is a community where all PITBulls get together to train hard and joke hard.

Irving is now like a big brother – I discovered that under his no-nonsense, menacing exterior is a man with deep integrity of what he does with a passion of a PITBull.
Serendipity. That’s how I found out about The PIT. All I did was take a different route home and I walked past the gym… It ticked off some items on my checklist. It was close to work and home and it was a boutique gym, which meant I didn’t have to deal with mountains of people and locker room drama. Plus, I needed work on my cholesterol and diabetes. After some email correspondence, I was face to face with the owner and PIT master Irving Henson. While he shares the same name as the master puppeteer Jim Henson, there was nothing funny about our first session. Built like a brick house with huge bulldog eyes, tattoos covering every inch of visible skin and a menacing drawl, he isn’t a guy you’d mess with. At my trial session, he basically threw out everything I had learnt in my decade of going to gyms and having trainers. WHAT?! But that piqued my interest enough…I mean, a whole new way of working out? No way! The lack of mirrors and weighing machine were explained succinctly by Irving – ‘You want to hiao, you hiao at home.’ and ‘Weighing machine? Just look in the mirror. You like what you see? No? Then train harder, eat cleaner.’ And so I put pen to paper and haven’t looked back since. Close to 4 months on, I am a happier, fitter camper. I started out as little cricket – I remember the first few sessions, I hardly broke a sweat but Irving assured me with his ‘Little Cricket’ speech – ‘Slowly lah. You will get there.’ Today, I can deadlift my body weight of 70kg and nothing gets me more than being able to improve my bench press max of 27kg because when I started, the only thing I could press was the button on the timer. I LOVE heading out to ‘the bar’ as they call it and leave floating recharged and energised. Everyone from the trainers to fellow trainees are fun, warm and friendly. No pretentiousness, no ego. Just a whole lotta sweat and a whole lotta fun. Irving is now like a big brother – I discovered that under his no-nonsense, menacing exterior is a man with deep integrity of what he does with a passion of a PITBull. Everything we do pushes me until I wanna ‘pengsan’ but what keeps me coming back is that it is simply bloody awesome! Oh, and then there’s that ‘minor’ thing of my cholesterol and blood sugar, both coming down enough for my doctor to say I must be doing something right – That something is The PIT.

The best thing about Ving as a trainer is that he educates you in every possible way – from the lift you’re doing, to how your body will respond to that lift and what you can do when you’re not lifting to help you lift more. There’s a science, a method (or to use Ving’s favourite word – a PROCESS) to everything to you do and learn at the PIT and if you bring the discipline, you will see the gains, trust me you will.
Having been addicted to running half marathons and marathons since 2010, I always thought (and as I have realised recently thanks to Ving, incorrectly so!) that strength and muscle work would not benefit my running in any way. To me, strength training was always associated with “bulking up”, “getting big” and “getting heavy”. So when I started out at the PIT in August 2014, I focused solely on the Metcon classes with a view to improving my conditioning and endurance. At the end of each class, Ving would ask me to give the strength class a try and I would politely decline, telling him, that as runner my focus was to work on conditioning. Then one day, Ving asked me the one question that would change my approach to working out (and also running) altogether – “If you’re not strong, what the F%*K do you think you’re conditioning bro?!?” And it was in the discovery of this answer, that resulted in my joining the strength class at the PIT and with it came not just the best training I have ever had, but also an invaluable education as to how my body and my muscles function and how I can be the strongest, the best and most efficient athlete and runner I can be. Ving was the first one to say that Squats and Deadlifts alone won’t make me a faster runner – but combine that strength work with the hours on the track and all of it together, will make me an efficient runner, the proof of which I’m seeing in my running times currently. In classic Ving logic, “do the maths bro – stronger legs means more efficient running which equals better finish times!” The best thing about Ving as a trainer is that he educates you in every possible way – from the lift you’re doing, to how your body will respond to that lift and what you can do when you’re not lifting to help you lift more. I first met Irving when we were both chubby 10 year olds trying to play football, failing miserably and ultimately losing contact as the years went by. Fast forward 25 years later and we reconnected over social media where Irving found out I had a chronic illness that hampered my level of physical activity. He reached out to help me get my body stronger and got me involved with his Strength Class at The PIT. The PIT has been the most welcoming gym I’ve worked out in. Everyone’s real friendly and easy going, Elite athletes, seasoned lifters, beginners, and SLAPs (the PITMasters acronym for “Steady Lah Ah Pek”) like me all seem to really fit in comfortably.
At the tender age of 51 this year I’ve been working out in gyms, off and on, for the better part of the last 3 decades. About 8 years ago I hurt my left shoulder badly and was stuck with a frozen shoulder for a year. Although better my shoulder never fully healed and there’s residual stiffness, and my chest and back had tightened up to try and protect the shoulder. So even though I got back to working out, I couldn’t get back to exercises that I thought required full mobility of my shoulders – like barbell squats, overhead presses etc. I went through 2 personal trainers who advocated substituting in exercises that avoided putting stress on my shoulders – machine squats and leg presses, and using light weights for overhead movements, avoiding dips etc. I’m glad I came across Irving’s blog and decided to give the PIT a try. I was hesitant at first – worried that the place would be filled with 20+ year old jocks tossing huge weights around, and that I’d be back in a shoulder brace in short time. The reality is my experience has been quite the opposite. The PIT has been the most welcoming gym I’ve worked out in. Everyone’s real friendly and easy going, Elite athletes, seasoned lifters, beginners, and SLAPs (the PITMasters acronym for “Steady Lah Ah Pek”) like me all seem to really fit in comfortably. Rather than pussyfoot about and avoid stressing my shoulder, Irving has made me address the weakness head-on and also perform targeted stretches and strengthening exercises to free up and strengthen the shoulder. I’m now doing full range barbell squats and overhead presses with weights I wouldn’t have dared to in the past. Each exercise and its set up is clearly explained to me so I am very comfortable getting into and executing each exercise with proper form. I’ve been working out at the PIT now for about 3 months, and am honestly astonished at the progress I’ve already made and continue looking forward to more PIT sessions.

I was impressed with the level of knowledge, creativity, style and professionalism of all the trainers I encountered at The PIT. Interestingly, it is also obvious that the level of motivation and enthusiasm imparted by the trainers inspires the clients who choose The PIT.
I had four days of training at the PIT during my visit to Singapore. To give me the flavor of what they have to offer, I was given different workouts each day using a variety of equipment, much of which I have never even seen let alone try before. Irving ensured that I was well warmed up and led me through a short instructional period to ensure that I was clear on the movements and to make sure my form was good. As I have had lower back surgery, this is critical to me. After the instruction, I was taken through the paces of the routine for the day while making it fun! I was impressed with the level of knowledge, creativity, style and professionalism of all the trainers I encountered at The PIT. Aside of finding the first class quite tough, what impressed me straight away was the attention Irving gave to all his students, his pretty in-depth knowledge about fitness and weight training and just the general vibe amongst his students who were somehow at ease and enjoying themselves, despite all the hard work.
Aside of general fitness, when I was looking around for a gym my main objective was to build strength to help with my cycling. I had been a member of various gyms over time, but never quite felt that it was helping me with core and leg strength. Most gyms seem to focus on muscle building rather than weight or strength training. I read about the PIT in a Time Out feature and decided to trial one of their group classes. Aside of finding the first class quite tough, what impressed me straight away was the attention Irving gave to all his students, his pretty in-depth knowledge about fitness and weight training and just the general vibe amongst his students who were somehow at ease and enjoying themselves, despite all the hard work. Anyway, I joined the gym and started a steady personal training regime with Irving. I feel that over the last few months I have made real progress as evidenced mostly by a pretty massive increase in my cycling strength (goal achieved!). But more importantly, all my training has been injury free and Irving makes sure you take your time before adding weights, to give your body a chance to catch-up and yes, avoid injuries. I’d highly recommend the PIT to anyone who is serious about first and foremost build all-round strength as fantastic base for any sport.

I have taken private lessons with Irving at the PIT to work on my strength and flexibility as part of my Muay Thai training . I wanted to be pushed and to improve my strength as I fight competitively. He delivered more than I expected. I have to admit I was sore after each session but I had this great feeling of improvement after each session and I was learning something about my body – how to move, my limits, flexibility, the list is endless.
